As the 2023 elections gather momentum, leading Anioma socio-cultural group, “Umu Anioma” Worldwide has warned Anioma Traditional rulers not to meddle in politics.

The warning was conveyed in an open letter, dated 11th July, 2022 and addressed to the Palace of the Obi of Ubulu Unor, HRM Obi Kikachukwu Henry Afamefune. 

Obi Kikachukwu from Anioma part of the state, was in January made the 2nd Vice Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council (DSTRC) with HRM Major General Felix Mujakperuo (rtd)  the Orodje of Okpe and HRM Pere Stanley Luke, Kalanama V111, the Pere of Akugbene-Mein as Chairman and 1st Vice-Chairman respectively, following the approval of the reconstitution of the Council by the Governor of the State, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa. 

In the letter jointly signed by Prince Emmanuel  Ohai, Convener, ‘Umu Anioma’ Worldwide and Jude Okolo, Secretary General, ‘Umu Anioma’ Worldwide, the group stated that, if any Anioma traditional ruler must participate in politics, that Anioma traditional ruler must be absolutely sure that they are  representing 100% the majority political view(s) of their subjects

In the letter issued on Monday, Prince Ohai stated that “I write as the Convener of Umu Anioma Worldwide and on behalf of Umu Anioma at large to respectfully ask that you and other Anioma traditional rulers absolutely stay clear of politics till further notice. If you and/or Any Anioma traditional ruler must participate in politics you and/or that Anioma traditional ruler must be absolutely sure that you are representing 100% the majority political view(s) of your subjects. 

According to the convener, this communication has become necessary in light of the prevailing circumstances in the country at present. 

“What we are trying to avoid is a scenario whereby any Anioma traditional ruler is claiming after the fact that “nobody told me…” 

To be clear, if any Anioma traditional ruler continues in their prior pattern of meddling in politics, the consequences for the Anioma youths and Anioma indigenes in general will be dire and grave, therefore it has become necessary that we reach out to make this request with all due respect”.  

“In view of the preceding, the Umu Anioma Foundation Worldwide has formed an Anioma Traditional Rulers Monitoring Council to monitor the activities of Anioma traditional rulers during this political season and beyond. 

” Please be assured that the main purpose of this communication is for us all to be on the same page and for there not to be any misunderstanding between the Anioma Traditional rulers and the millions of anxious Anioma indigenes globally. 

“Obi Kikachukwu, I respectfully ask that you forward this communication to all Anioma traditional rulers and other interested parties”  the letter stated.
